Does Anyone Have Any Clever Ways To Save Money For A Vacation Coming Up In A Few Months?
A Reader Asks…
I will be going to Hawaii this summer and want to save up as much as I can so I can put less on my credit card. I also want some extra money to do some cool but expensive things there but not feel guilty about spending the money.
Any suggestions? THanks!

One way my fiance and I save money is by saving all of our change and $1 bills. At the end of the day we both put our pocket change and $1 bills into a mason jar, and about once a month or so we put it into our savings account. And that’s going to be our spending money for our honeymoon.

Take an honest look at your spending habits and cut what you can. Eat out less and order less expensive things when you do. Bring your own coffee instead of starbucks or buy a cup of coffee instead of a latte as an example.
Put change in a jar at the end of the day. Set a certain amount of money aside each month and put it in an interest bearing account. If you have a credit card that earns points and has a zero balance use that for your regular spending and pay it all the way off so you get the points. Just make sure you pay it off or you will end up spending more and saving less.
If you move money into savings at the beginning of the month you will know you can’t spend it and save more.
Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Open a savings acct. If you haven’t enrolled in online banking thru whatever bank you use, do so. It’s so easy to see where all of your little expenses add up and it makes it very easy to transfer funds. I have mine set up so each payday a certain amount automatically goes into my savings acct so I don’t miss it.
Between now and then, live frugally like you are broke. Pack your lunch. Don’t eat out unless it’s a special occasion and avoid little expenses like daily coffees, soft drinks, going to the movies, and magazines. Just remind yourself that in a few years you’ll have awesome memories of all the things you did on your trip, but you won’t even think twice about this blouse/purse/shoes that you’re considering buying.
Since the beginning of the new year I’ve saved almost $2000 by just paying attention to what I’m spending. I assessed my bank statement and saw that I was spending $100-$200 per month at least on convenience buys like morning coffee, fast food, and eating at restaurants. I also placed a hold on all cosmetic purchases (except fresh mascara, that gets yucky) and making myself use what I already have. I’ve been using shampoo I had stored away under the sink for the last 6 months and probably have enough to last me another few months. Not only have these changes saved me money, I’m eating much healthier, and living more “green.”

You have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T. What kind of cutbacks can you make? For example: I drink bottled water. Now at $1 a bottle on something that covers over 65% of our planet is not smart. So I bought one of those water filters that screw into your faucet. I have bottles that I refil over and over again. I take them to work. Do you have a lot of small appliances around that house that are always on? I cut my electronic bill almost in half by unplugging all the clock radios and night lights. I also bought some of those florescent bulbs that look a lot like a regular bulb. These things use 80% less electricity than regular bulbs. Ave 60Watt incalescent bulb runs you 2 cents per hour. Ave 60Watt energy bulb averages 0.5 cents per hour. You would be surprised, but these small things add up. I know I was spending money on the water filter and energy efficient bulbs but these things will pay for themselves in a month providing they pertain to you. If you really need the money right away start cutting back on your food costs. Romain noodles cost a dime and they taste just as good as campbells chicken noodle that costs $130 a can. Ok no chicken in romain noodles, but you are probably just missing about 4 tiny pieces of chicken. Adjust your toilet to use lesser water. If you don’t know how to do this then put a brick inside your toilet ‘chamber’. You will use a little lesser water each time you flush..Before you know it you will be ahead. Wanna be creative? Find yourself leaving lights on? Buy a motion sensor switch, the lights will turn on when you enter the room and will turn off (by a set amount of time) when you leave the room. I have one, they cost $15 at HomeDepot. Need new windshield wipers for your car? Who says you have to buy 2? You only need the new one on the drivers side, leave the old wiper on the passenger side. So remember you have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T! Yours truly seahorsehawrey.

Yes, the best way I found to save $ is to save on the travel costs. If you book thru a corporate travel broker you can save more $ than even on priceline or hotwire.
There are lots of them available but I included a link below for a reliable travel broker that I have personally used – I got this exact same package myself several times & always had a great time. It’s easy to save $ when you’re not spending a fortune on hotel & airfare. Also, a nearby scuba place called AquaZone will give you a free scuba lesson too!
Aloha!

Well one thing my family does to save money is we cut down on how much we eat out. Usually we eat out twice on Saturday and then once on Sunday, then also once during the week. That’s 4 times a week! So we decided to eat out less and cook in the house. If you go online you can find quick easy recipes that don’t require that much money. It helps you eat healthier and save more. Another thing you can do, is if you have things in your house that you don’t want, then sell it! Anything you dont want, somebody else does. Hope this helps and you have a guilt-free time in Hawaii.

You could make an extra bit of cash http://cash crate.com/1296913 (minus the space) . You go through surveys and do them, and you don’t need to pay anything at all. You can earn $50-$500 a week if you’re good at it.

There are only two ways:
1. Increase your income.
2. Decrease your spending.
