How To File States Taxes Not Filed For Past 3 Years?

A Reader Asks…

My wife and I haven’t filed state taxes for the past 3 years but have filed our federal taxes. For the past two years, we have had about $1600 additional taken away from our federal return. How can we file the past 3 years of state taxes? If money is owed, even that was taken from federal return, can we get that amount back?

My dh started working for himself at the beginning of this year. He has never worked for himself before. All the tax information states to estimate based on last years taxes but he makes a totally different amount this year and its not steady income. How do I estimate how much to save out for taxes?

What is the annual income maximum, that a person can make and not be required to file taxes?
If someone has not filed taxes in the past 6 years, can they file them now and get caught up? If so, how?
Also, if a person does not have W-4 forms for that time period, how would they get copies of them. If they are unable to get copies, how do they know what amounts to use for filing.
Thanks.
